Alumni Award
Ruben Duran
Pastor Duran’s life and ministry boldly embodies Jesus’ Great Commission to “make disciples of all nations.” Born in Lima, Peru, and educated at the Lutheran Bible Institute of Seattle (now Trinity Lutheran College) and Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary, Ruben and his wife, the Rev. Jean Duran, have passionately served Christ’s church by encouraging it to reflect the rainbow of colors in our diverse society. Ruben serves as Director of New Congregations in the Congregational and Synodical Mission of the ELCA. Trinity is proud to present Ruben Duran with its Alumni Service Award, which recognizes “one of its own” for exemplary servant leadership on behalf of all God’s people.
Kairos Award
John and Eleanor Yackel
Eleanor and John Yackel live the Prophet Micah’s answer to the question, “And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” Their commitment to service is exemplified in the company John co-founded, American Guidance Service, which publishes materials for students with special education needs, and by Eleanor’s service working with people and groups to promote justice and peace. Through the Yackel Foundation, they fund programs that “promote peace and justice through cross-cultural education and conflict resolution” as well as programs promoting sustainable agriculture. Trinity is proud to present John and Eleanor Yackel with the Kairos Award, established to recognize lives committed to and actively seeking God’s justice and mercy in the world.
