With the college on Spring Break, three track and field athletes were in action over the weekend. The trio consisted of throwers Janell Alyea and Hunter Hammer along with hurdler McKenna Woodworth. They competed at the Lewis & Clark Spring Break Open in Portland, Ore., and at the Oregon Preview at historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
The trio hit two meets to ensure both Hunter Hammer and Janell Alyea could compete after Hammer just missed qualifying for the Oregon Preview. The meets were scheduled so that, in theory, the throwers could attend both meets. Unfortunately Alyea missed her discus flight at Hayward after the hammer competition went longer than expected due to the size of the field at Lewis and Clark.
In the limited competition at Lewis & Clark, Alyea once again was dominant. She won the discus for the third consecutive meet where her 48.00m/157’6” throw represented an improvement of 2.82m from her previous personal best. Alyea is currently the NCCAA leader in the event by a whopping 6.4 meters (21 feet).
Hammer showed well in the hammer throw where his 45.32m/148’ 8” throw represented a personal record and was good for 9th place. Hammer placed 7th in the shot and 6th in the discus.
Woodworth became the lone Trinity representative at the Oregon Preview after Alyea missed her discus flight. Running into a 1.4 meter per second headwind, Woodworth clocked a 17.74 in the 100m hurdles taking 16th overall. She placed 16th again in the 400m hurdles with a 1:12.44. Both times were shy of her best marks this season.
Hammer and Alyea are in Texas for competitions this weekend. The two will compete at the Texas State University Bobcat Invitational and at the Victor Lopez Invitational at Rice University in Houston. The rest of the team is competing on March 29 at the Club Northwest Spring Break Open hosted at West Seattle Stadium.
