Trinity Lutheran College is excited to announce the addition of Track & Field as a Varsity sport. The team will compete this spring during the 2013 season, but will begin recruiting immediately with the 2013-2014 school year in mind.
The decision to add the sport was a natural next step after the addition of Cross Country at Trinity a little over a year ago. With a distance running squad already participating in the fall, those same athletes will now also be able to represent the College during the Track & Field season – a tremendous aid to a Cross Country program that is growing quickly.
Matt Koenigs, who also heads the Cross Country program at Trinity and is simultaneously the coach for one of the Nation’s best Junior College running programs at Everett Community College, has accepted the position to lead the program into the future.
Scholarships will be available for spring semester transfers who wish to compete during the 2013 season, but the inaugural team this spring is expected to comprise of mostly the distance runners who were already on this fall’s Cross Country roster. The 2013-2014 recruiting class will focus on the addition of athletes who will participate in the sprints/jumps and throws events, though those athletes will certainly have an events coach and a place to train and participate immediately; the team will train at Everett Memorial Stadium and Coach Koenigs already has events coaches in place.
Trinity plans to build a Track & Field program that provides a high caliber opportunity for student athletes to continue to participate in their event at the collegiate level.
“Seven years ago, when I began coaching at Everett Community College, there was neither a two-year nor a four-year College Track & Field program in Snohomish County; now there is one of each. We are excited about this new opportunity that we can provide to our Track & Field community and hope that local community can help us initially by letting us know about potential future student-athletes who might be interested in continuing their education and sport with us here at Trinity,” Koenigs said.
