A former collegiate and professional goalkeeper, Olsen's coaching credits include University of Washington where he mentored All-American goalkeeper Dusty Hudock, who finished the 1992 season with the nation's best goals against average (0.50). His previous collegiate coaching experience also includes a one-year appointment at his alma mater, Wake Forest. Olsen was the girls head coach at Skyline High School in Issaquah (1998-2004) and was named King County Coach of the Year in 2000. He has worked as a staff coach for Washington State and Region VI ODP squads. Olsen is currently the Assistant Director of Coaching and head coach for Emerald City FC.

Olson played collegiate soccer at both Indiana and Wake Forest. He helped lead Indiana to the NCAA National title in 1988 and was a member of Wake Forest's ACC championship team in 1991. Heading overseas in 1992, Olsen trained in Sweden with Hammarby IF and AIK Stockholm. Olson also played in Holland with AJAX and Vitesse Arnhem of the Dutch first division. His international experience lead him to England, where he trained with Wolverhamton Wanderers, West Bromwich Albion and Luton FC of the First Division. Olsen was later drafted by Major League Soccer's New York/New Jersey Metro Stars and later played for D.C. United, a team that won the inaugural MLS Cup Championship over the Los Angeles Galaxy.

Olson graduated from Wake Forest in 1991 with Bachelor of Arts in Speech Communications. He is an A licensed coach receiving the NSCAA Premier Diploma and US National Goalkeeping License.
