Trinity Lutheran College announced today that it has hired Harlan Slind to lead its men’s soccer program as head coach.
Slind has over 20 years of soccer experience on multiple levels, from playing in the Washington Olympic Development Program as a youth, to owning and working with various soccer academies, to traveling internationally to compete semi-professionally.
Slind attended Kennewick High School and earned his B.A. from The Master’s College in Newhall, Calif., where he and his team qualified for the national tournament three times and he earned an NCCAA Championship Ring. While in school, he earned multiple awards, including All-District, All-Regional, and Umbro All-American honors in 1993. After college, Slind played in various leagues throughout the US and over-seas, including the USL.
In the mid 1990s, Slind coached at Whitworth University, under the now Oregon State men’s coach Steve Simmons, and also coached at the high school level at Lewis and Clark High School in Spokane.
“Trinity has hired an experienced and highly dedicated soccer coach in Harlan Slind, a person with the expertise and skill to guide our men’s team toward a bright future,” said Athletic Director Matt Koenigs.
To Slind, a soccer team is more than a group of athletes trying to win games. Among his goals is building upon the current team culture to help Trinity’s program excel in winning games as well as being leaders in the school and in the community at large.
“You can play hard and still have a very positive effect on your community. Relationships in a team setting are life-changing. All of the relationships I have cultivated will help me move this program to a mountain of success,” Slind said.
Slind has great things in mind for the men’s team at Trinity.
“As a coach, I’m really proud of the way I run a fair but tight program. I want the athletes to come away from the program proud to have been part of Trinity soccer, and feeling they accomplished their goals on the pitch as an athlete and a teammate,” Slind said.
Slind is married and has two daughters. He begins in his new position this week.
